An encuentro is the most traditional of the three big formats. The ronda is respected, the cabeceo is the default invitation, the music is strictly tango-vals-milonga in classic tandas, and the dancing is in close embrace. Sizes are kept deliberately small (often 80–150 dancers) and the leader/follower ratio is balanced by design. The result is a calm, focused atmosphere that experienced dancers describe as “the most milonguero week-end of the year.”
Encuentros are not for everyone, and that's the point. Choose one if you love close embrace, traditional music, and the etiquette of a Buenos Aires milonga. Many require registration in pairs or by invitation; check the organisers' website early. Some run partner waiting lists — exactly the kind of thing TangoPartner can help with.
