How to choose your format

Not sure whether to book a festival, a marathon, or an encuentro? Start here.

What is a tango festival?

A tango festival combines workshops with international maestros, evening milongas, and often a closing gala. Most run Friday-Sunday; the bigger ones stretch to a full week.

  • -Best for: dancers of all levels who want structured learning alongside social dancing.
  • -Typical format: morning and afternoon workshops, evening milongas, sometimes a live orchestra.
  • -What to look for: lineup of maestros, whether it is all under one roof, and size of the event.
  • -How to pick your first: smaller is usually better. Look for "all levels welcome" in the programme.

What is a tango marathon?

A marathon is a 48-72 hour event centred entirely on social dancing -- no classes, no shows, just back-to-back milongas from Friday night through Sunday afternoon.

  • -Best for: experienced dancers who want to dance, sleep, and dance again.
  • -Typical format: milongas run continuously with rotating DJs; breakfast and lunch often included.
  • -What to look for: DJ lineup, balanced registration (50/50 leader/follower), proximity to hotels.
  • -Tip: pack sturdy shoes. The floor never really stops.

What is a tango encuentro?

An encuentro milonguero is a small, curated, often invitation-only gathering built around the close embrace, the cabeceo, and traditional tandas. Sizes are deliberately kept to 80-150 dancers.

  • -Best for: experienced dancers who love milonguero style and traditional etiquette.
  • -Typical format: traditional tandas (tango-vals-milonga), strict cabeceo, ronda respected, no performances.
  • -What to look for: balanced registration, organisers reputation, and whether you need to register in pairs.
  • -Note: not for beginners -- the etiquette is real and expected.

How to find a tango partner for an event

Most tango travellers go to events without a fixed partner -- that is completely normal. At festivals and marathons, you dance with many different people. At encuentros, the cabeceo makes the invitation process part of the experience.

If you want to travel with a workshop partner, practice partner, or someone to share the experience with, TangoPartner lets you pin a notice to any event's board. Other dancers heading to the same event can message you directly.
